Neither consumption of milk makes a cold worse, nor is orange juice a substitute for a piece of fruit. These are just some of the myths about infant feeding circulating around there. Although in general we are all relatively clear about what a healthy and balanced diet consists of and what foods we should offer our little ones, we must pay attention to certain beliefs that exist around food and that lack validity or scientific reasoning to support them.

1. A juice is a piece of fruit
No, it is not. In the juice, the sugar of the fruit (fructose, a simple sugar) is free, being potentially more harmful to the teeth when being in direct contact with it. In addition, a large part of the vitamins have been lost (which are oxidized when in contact with air), and above all, almost all of the fiber in the fruit has been lost.

2. Cookies are better than industrial pastries
Industrial cookies are industrial pastries, unless they are homemade and you control the type of fat and the amount of sugar you add.

3. Homemade pastries are healthy
Not necessarily! Some homemade muffins or biscuits have so much sugar that they are far from healthy. Sweets should not be part of the normal breakfast of children and we should choose healthier options, such as oatmeal or toast.

4. Breakfast cereals are a healthy breakfast

7. Bread makes you fat

9. Better margarine than butter
Not necessarily. Butter has saturated fat, since it comes from the cream of the milk, but, in general, it is a minimally processed fat. Margarine, on the other hand, is a highly manipulated fat and it can have trans fats that are even more harmful - depending on the case. Much better to use olive oil that contains unsaturated fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins beneficial to health.

10. Nuts are excessively fatty
Certainly, nuts contain fat, but it is unsaturated fat that is very beneficial for the brain, and, if the portion is kept within the recommended limits -a handful generally-, they constitute a very beneficial snack for children's health.

11. Milk makes a cold worse
Nothing to do with reality, milk does not make mucus thick, but it is not appropriate to substitute milk for water intake, since it is the water that favors the elimination of mucus.

12. Vitamin C protects against colds
It is only a half truth, because protecting does not protect as such, but acceptable deposits of vitamin C in the body ensure the proper functioning of the defenses and, therefore, can increase protection against infections.

13. It is better to choose the low-fat versions of foodss
Not much less, the normal thing is that, the less processed a food is, the better, and the low-fat versions are usually highly manipulated.

14. Frozen vegetables or fish lack nutritional value
